Martial Arts is Good for Physical Fitness – and Mental Strength, too!

When you talk about health and wellness with your family, martial arts is probably far from your mind. However, a study has revealed that it is beneficial not only in terms of physical fitness, but also mental strength. The study was conducted by Ashleigh Johnstone, a PhD researcher in cognitive neuroscience at Bangor University. She and her team selected 21 adult practitioners of the martial arts (amateur level), which include karate, judo and taekwondo, along with 27 adults with no background in sports, to participate in a computer-based, attention network test. Three types of attention were assessed through the test, alertness, orienting (when attention shifts) and executive (responding to a situation with conflicting information).

The results showed that martial arts practitioners scored higher than non-practitioners. Additionally, the study also revealed that those with more experience in the martial arts they were practicing demonstrated the best alertness during the tests. These findings suggest that consistent training in the martial arts have long-lasting positive effects on attention – and who wouldn’t want that? Whether you’re completing your tasks at work, home or school, being able to focus better, pay attention to details and respond appropriately in a quick period of time can do wonders for productivity.
